2006 INTERTRAFFIC INNOVATION AWARD: JURY SELECTS NINE CANDIDATES
The third Intertraffic Innovation Award for the most innovative exhibit will be presented during Intertraffic Amsterdam 2006 (4-7 April), the leading commercial showcase for infrastructure, traffic management, safety and parking. The Intertraffic Innovation Award is sponsored by Rijkswaterstaat.
New system
The organisers have now decided that group awards should be presented in three categories: infrastructure & safety, traffic management and parking. One of the three winners will be chosen as the overall winner of the 2006 Intertraffic Innovation Award. The awards will be presented by Karla Peijs, the Dutch Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, on 4 April during the opening of Intertraffic Amsterdam 2006.
High quality of entries
On 18 January an expert international jury selected nine candidates from among the strikingly large number of entries. As there were 82 entries this year, compared with 44 in 2004, the Innovation Award is clearly carving out a leading role for itself in the traffic and transport industry. This is a reflection of the importance attached to innovation, which is essential in maintaining and improving mobility. The quality of the entries is excellent. Many new technologies are represented, particularly in the traffic management field. Existing techniques are also being linked together and combined to create new concepts with vastly greater potential than the individual components.
Criteria
The judging naturally focuses on the innovative character of the entries and their practical uses. Another criterion is the value added both for traffic and for society in terms of the environment and energy consumption.
The shortlist
The following companies have been shortlisted in the infrastructure and safety category:
- NMA VerkeersTechniek BV (NL) for its Mobile Automatic Roadblock System (MARS). The road blocks are designed to be placed and removed without the road maintenance crew having to leave their vehicle.

- Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions (UK) for its DAB Break-in Radio System. Warning system based on digital radio for alerting and instructing traffic in the event of emergencies in tunnels.
