International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, Rules

The objective of the warning signalling is to reduce the collision risk for planes in airports and boundaries.

It is obligatory to mark with beacons all fixed and mobile objects that entail the risk of collision in the proximity of airports and heliports.

Minimal recommendations for obstacles signalling with lights are outlined in Annex 14, Vol. I, Chapter 6 of International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO.

Those norms define: types of beacons needed for the obstacles signalling as well as the minimum intensity, their situation with respect to the height and their range. The luminosity intensity of a beacon should never be lower than10 candles according to ICAO rules.

The instructions to this purpose can be seek out at the airports or aerial navigation authorities.
